There is an ongoing debate in aesthetic dentistry that I believe is fundamentally misframed. The debate is between craft and technology - between the handmade and the digital. Proponents of digital workflows argue that CAD/CAM precision eliminates human error. Advocates of traditional craftsmanship argue that no machine can replicate the artistic eye of a master ceramist.
At ACE DNTL, we believe both sides are right - and both sides are incomplete. This is why we refused to choose.
Our process begins with digital precision. Digital scans capture the patient's dental anatomy at a level of accuracy that physical impressions cannot match. Digital design allows us to plan the outcome - tooth by tooth - with mathematical precision. We can visualise proportions, test occlusal relationships, and share designs with patients before a single tooth is touched.
This digital foundation is essential. It ensures that the structural parameters of the case - the fit, the bite, the proportions - are correct before the artistic work begins. It eliminates the dimensional inaccuracies that can occur with traditional impression materials. It provides our laboratory with a precise framework within which to work.
But the digital framework is exactly that - a framework. It defines the boundaries. It does not fill them with life.
That is where the hand takes over. Once the digital design is approved, our master technicians begin the hand-layering process. Working within the digitally defined parameters, they build each veneer from raw porcelain powder - layer by layer, colour by colour, translucency by translucency.
This is where art enters the equation. A digital system can define the shape and dimensions of a veneer with perfect accuracy. It cannot replicate the intuitive decisions a master ceramist makes about colour depth at different points on the tooth. It cannot replicate the subtle surface texture that creates natural light scatter. It cannot replicate the individual characterisation that makes each veneer unique.
We use technology for what technology does best: precision, consistency, and efficiency. We use the human hand for what only the human hand can do: artistry, interpretation, and biological authenticity.
The result is a veneer that fits with digital precision and looks with handcrafted beauty. The structural accuracy of a digitally designed restoration combined with the optical depth and individuality of a hand-layered one. Neither approach alone can achieve what both together produce.
This dual approach requires a laboratory team that is fluent in both languages - the digital and the analogue. Our technicians are trained in CAD/CAM systems and in traditional ceramic layering techniques. They move between the two seamlessly, understanding when to rely on the machine and when to trust their own eye and hand.
Some clinics are fully digital. Some are fully traditional. We believe the best result lives in the space between - where precision meets soul, where data meets instinct, where technology and craft are not competitors but collaborators.
