Why the Lab Changes the Result

Most clinics outsource their lab work. Here is why an in-house laboratory is the single biggest factor in quality.

If I could tell every patient considering a smile makeover one thing that would immediately improve their ability to evaluate a clinic, it would be this: find out where the lab is.

The laboratory is where your veneers are made. It is where raw porcelain becomes the thing you will see in the mirror every morning for the next twenty years. It is, without exaggeration, the single most important factor in the quality of your result - more important than the technology in the chair, more important than the clinic's Instagram presence, more important than the dentist's credentials.

Most dental clinics outsource their laboratory work. The dentist takes an impression or digital scan, selects a shade from a guide, takes some photographs, and sends everything to an external laboratory. A technician who has never met the patient - who has never seen their face, their skin tone, their lip line, their expressions - fabricates the veneers based on the information provided.

This system works well enough for standard restorative dentistry. A crown for a back tooth does not require artistic interpretation. But a smile makeover is different. A smile makeover is visible. It interacts with the patient's face. It needs to harmonise with their features, their complexion, their personality.

At ACE DNTL, our laboratory is in-house. Our master technicians are not external contractors - they are part of the clinical team. They meet the patient. They study the face. They understand the brief not through a work order but through direct observation and conversation.

During the fabrication process, our technicians have access to the clinical team at all times. Questions about shade, characterisation, surface texture - these are resolved in real time, face to face. There is no courier delay. There is no miscommunication through written notes. The feedback loop is immediate and continuous.

Our technicians attend try-in appointments. They see how the provisional veneers look on the patient. They observe how light falls on the porcelain in the context of the patient's actual face. They make adjustments based on what they see - not based on what someone described to them in an email.

This proximity changes everything. It is the difference between a portrait painted from a photograph and a portrait painted from life. Both may be technically skilled. But only one captures the subject.

The investment required to maintain an in-house laboratory of this calibre is substantial. The equipment, the materials, the talent - all of it represents a significant commitment. Most clinics calculate that outsourcing is more cost-effective. And they are correct, from a business perspective. But we did not build ACE DNTL to optimise costs. We built it to optimise results.

When you choose a clinic for your smile makeover, ask about the lab. Ask to see it. Ask to meet the technician. If the answer is that the lab is external, or that meeting the technician is not possible, you have learned something important about the level of result that practice is capable of delivering.

Your veneers deserve to be made by someone who has seen your smile - not just your scan.
