can turkey veneers be removed and redone
Yes. Existing units are sectioned and removed under local anaesthetic, the tooth underneath is cleaned and assessed, and a new restoration is made. The limiting factor is how much tooth structure remains and whether the nerve is alive, not the removal itself. Expect 2-3 visits over about a month, with temporaries worn in between so the bite and length can be tested before anything final is bonded.
how do i know if my turkey veneers are actually crowns
Look at an X-ray or ask for one. A veneer covers the front surface and leaves the back of the tooth as natural enamel, so you can feel your own tooth with your tongue. A crown wraps the tooth completely and shows a continuous margin all the way round on the radiograph. If twenty teeth were done in under a week and all of them were drilled, they are almost certainly crowns.
my gums are receding around my veneers is it too late
Usually not. Recession around new crowns is most often a response to a margin placed too deep or a shape that is too bulbous to clean, and the tissue recovers once the contour is corrected, typically within 6-8 weeks. It becomes harder to reverse if bone has already been lost, which is why an X-ray and a periodontal assessment should come before any new porcelain is planned.
how much does it cost to fix veneers done abroad in spain
Veneer pricing in Spain realistically tops out around €1,000 per tooth, and a full ten-unit remake runs from about €2,000 at the budget end to around €10,000 for fully handcrafted work. Any root canals, gum treatment or implants needed first sit on top of that. Selective repair of one or two units costs a fraction of a full remake, so ask for a findings-based plan rather than a blanket quote.

Turkey Veneers Gone Wrong: What Dentists See Afterwards, and What Can Still Be Fixed

Most veneer work that goes wrong abroad fails for the same reason, and it has nothing to do with the country. Here is what dentists actually find afterwards, which signs mean see someone this week, and how much of it can still be saved.

Veneer work done abroad usually goes wrong for one reason: healthy teeth were cut down to stumps for crowns sold as veneers, in a week. What dentists see afterwards is inflamed gums, dark margins, food packing, an altered bite, and nerves that die months later. Much of it can still be fixed. The porcelain is replaceable. The tooth structure underneath is what decides how much.

This is not an argument about Turkey. There are excellent, conservative dentists in Istanbul, and there is careless work in Marbella, London and Los Angeles. The problem is a business model built on speed: twenty units, five days, one price, no time for the tooth to be assessed, protected or re-checked. When the timetable is fixed before the diagnosis, biology loses.

My veneers from Turkey look fine and don't hurt — should I worry?

No, not automatically. A large number of cases done abroad are stable, comfortable and will serve for years, and no pain plus healthy pink gums is genuinely reassuring. But absence of pain is not proof of health, because a heavily prepared tooth can lose its nerve silently, so book a check with X-rays within the next few months rather than treating it as an emergency.

What you are looking for at that appointment is simple: are the nerves alive, are the margins sealed, is the bite even, and how much tooth is left under each unit. Those four answers tell you everything about the next ten years.

Which signs mean I should see a dentist within days, not months?

See someone within a few days if you have any of the following. These are the signs of infection, a failing nerve or a leaking margin, and all of them get more expensive the longer they wait.

  • A pimple, bump or small blister on the gum above a veneer, with or without a bad taste
  • Throbbing pain that wakes you at night, or pain that lingers more than 30 seconds after something hot
  • Facial or gum swelling
  • A veneer or crown that is loose, clicks, or moves when you press it
  • One tooth that has gone visibly darker or greyer than its neighbours
  • Gums that bleed heavily and have not settled after two weeks of correct cleaning

Book within a few weeks, not days, for: cold sensitivity that fades quickly, food trapping between units, a rough or catching edge, a thin dark line at the gum, or a bite that feels high on one side. Uncomfortable and worth solving, but not dangerous.

What do dentists actually see when someone comes in after veneers abroad?

The recurring pattern is over-preparation plus over-contouring: teeth reduced to crown stumps, then rebuilt with units that are slightly too thick, too long and too flat, sitting a fraction too deep under the gum. Almost every downstream problem traces back to those two decisions.

The findings we document most often at second-opinion consultations:

  • Gum inflammation that will not resolve. Margins placed too far below the gum line, or an emergence profile that is too bulbous to clean. The gum is not infected by the porcelain, it is irritated by the shape.
  • Open margins and recurrent decay. A gap of even 100-200 microns between crown and tooth is a plaque trap. Decay under a crown is often painless until it reaches the nerve.
  • Dead or dying nerves. Studies of full-coverage crown preparation report pulp death in roughly 4-15% of prepared teeth over ten years. Prepare twenty teeth and the arithmetic stops being abstract.
  • Bite and joint problems. When twenty units are made in five days, the bite is often set to the machine's average rather than to the patient's jaw. Jaw ache, morning headaches and chipping follow.
  • Monolithic, machine-shaded porcelain. One flat colour across the whole arch, no internal depth, no texture, no light passing through the edges. It reads as a bright band rather than as teeth.
  • No records. No X-rays, no shade prescription, no material name. Patients frequently cannot tell us what is in their mouth.

Why does the amount of tooth removed matter more than the porcelain?

Because porcelain can always be replaced, and tooth cannot. A conservative veneer removes roughly 0.3-0.7mm of enamel and keeps the bond on enamel, which is where the strongest and most durable seal lives. A crown preparation removes 1.5-2mm all the way round, which is often more than half the visible tooth and takes the margin into dentine.

Once a tooth is at crown level, every future decision is narrowed. You are no longer choosing between veneers and no treatment. You are choosing between one crown and the next crown. That is the real cost of a five-day full-arch package, and it is the part no refund covers. Our own scoring framework, the ACE Smile Index, weighs remaining tooth structure and gum health alongside appearance for exactly this reason: a beautiful result on a compromised foundation is not a good result.

My gums are red, swollen and pulling back from my veneers — is that normal?

It is common after work done abroad, and it is usually fixable, but it is not normal and it will not settle on its own if the cause is the shape of the crown. Gums respond to what sits against them: correct the contour and the margin, and healthy tissue returns in most cases within 6-8 weeks.

At home, do the unglamorous things properly while you wait. Clean between every unit daily with interdental brushes sized by a hygienist, not floss guessed at in a chemist. Use a soft brush at the gum line with light pressure, an alcohol-free rinse if the tissue is sore, and stop any whitening or abrasive paste, which does nothing to porcelain and everything to gum irritation. If bleeding persists past two weeks of genuinely good cleaning, the problem is the crown, not your technique.

One of my veneers suddenly chipped or came off — what do I do right now?

Keep the piece, stop chewing on that side, and get seen within a few days. Do not glue it back with household adhesive, because superglue contaminates the tooth surface and can turn a re-cement into a full remake.

If a whole unit came off cleanly and there is a tooth-shaped stump underneath, it was a crown and the tooth may be sensitive to air and cold, so avoid extremes and cover it with sugar-free gum only if the dentist is more than a day away. If the tooth underneath looks dark, short or has a small metal or fibre post visible, that changes the plan and needs an X-ray before anything is re-cemented.

Can Turkey veneers be repaired, or does everything have to be redone?

Selective repair is often possible, and a good clinician will always try to save what is sound. Whether a unit is repairable depends on the seal, the gum and the nerve, not on where it was made.

Is it too late if my teeth were already cut down to stumps?

It is very rarely too late. A tooth that has been over-prepared but is alive, sealed and surrounded by healthy bone can carry a new, properly made restoration for decades. What has been lost is the option of doing something more conservative, not the option of a good result.

The rebuild is a different exercise from a first-time smile makeover, and honestly a harder one. We work with the shape the previous dentist left, so we spend longer in temporaries, testing the bite, the lip line and the tooth length in the mouth before anything final is made. That is why the rhythm is 2-3 visits across about a month rather than a single week. Nothing final is made until the provisional version has been worn, eaten with and seen in daylight.

How much does it cost to redo veneers done abroad, in Spain?

In Spain, veneer pricing realistically tops out at around €1,000 per tooth, and a full ten-unit case runs from roughly €2,000 at the budget end to around €10,000 for fully handcrafted work. Redo cases sit at the upper end, because the diagnostics, the temporaries and the extra chair time are real work, and because any root canals or implants sit on top of the veneer price.

Two things are worth knowing before you compare that with the original package price. The first is that the same hand-finished veneer sells for around €4,000 a tooth in Los Angeles or Dubai. Spain's ceiling is a market fact, not a quality ceiling, and it is one of the honest reasons patients fly here. The second is where cut-price offers find their margin: there is zirconia on the market costing less than a cup of coffee per disc, and it is the raw material behind a great many five-day packages.

How do I make sure the same thing doesn't happen twice?

Ask three questions of any clinic: how much tooth are you removing in millimetres, who makes the porcelain and where, and will I wear a trial version before anything permanent is bonded. Vague answers to any of the three are your signal.

Our own answer is a slower one. The ACE ceramics laboratories are ours, with a design studio inside every clinic so a technician sits next to the patient, plus a central advanced lab with master ceramists among the best in Europe. We use e.max on some cases, hand-layered feldspathic on others, and top-grade highest-translucency zirconia on others. On every case the surface is hand-layered, hand-painted and hand-stained for real three-dimensional depth, then hand-textured and hand-polished. Our most-used combination, and the one our own data and the Smile Index rate best-looking, most hygienic and longest-lasting, is Prettau P4 high-translucency zirconia taken deliberately unpainted from the machine, with no pre-shaded block and no machine colouring, then finished entirely by hand. It is the most expensive zirconia on the market before a single hour of handwork begins, and in many cases it outperforms hand-layered feldspathic, the classic beauty benchmark, while being far more versatile and stronger.

That approach only exists because the lab is ours. A fast-production model cannot copy it, which is precisely the point. If you are weighing a second opinion, bring your photographs and any records you have, and start with an honest assessment of the teeth rather than a quote for porcelain veneers. Sometimes the answer is a full remake. Sometimes it is two units and a hygienist. Knowing which one you need is worth the appointment on its own.
